Nederlands Dans Theater has been one of the leading dance companies world-wide since it began in 1959. Although all its dancers have been classically trained, it is modern dance rather than ballet that Nederlands Dans Theater engages in, at the highest international level. Anders Hellström is the artistic director of Nederlands Dans Theater. He compiles programmes combining the gems of the company’s own repertoire – works by in-house choreographers Jirí Kylián and Lightfoot León – with new creations by established choreographers and raging talents. Together they conjure up a world of beauty and animation in the Lucent Danstheater in Den Haag.
A world of innovative and inspiring dance which creates room for adventure and risk. Given the international character and the universal language of dance, Nederlands Dans Theater is a popular guest on all the big stages. The company travels the world, from Den Haag to New York and from Tokyo to Rio de Janeiro.
Nederlands Dans Theater regularly accompanies Queen Beatrix or the prime minister on Dutch state visits. Nederlands Dans Theater comprises two ensembles representing two generations of dancers: from budding talent starting their career in Nederlands Dans Theater II to full bloom in Nederlands Dans Theater I.
In 2006 the management and board of Nederlands Dans Theater had to decide that Nederlands Dans Theater III, the project company for dancers aged 40 and up, could not be continued in its current form due to the financial situation. Plans to continue the group and realize new projects are being investigated.
Nederlands Dans Theater is being subsidized by the Community of Den Haag and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
