Where is Cedar Lake? From The Adjustment Bureau to UK Stages

Where is Cedar Lake? A question demanded repeatedly by Matt Damon as he frantically races through the streets of New York City in romantic sci-fi thriller The Adjustment Bureau (2011). Well, Dance Consortium can tell you exactly where they are, or will be, come autumn 2013.

The contemporary ballet company you may recognise thanks to Emily Blunt joining the company as a dancer especially for The Adjustment Bureau, have set their sights on the UK for their next international tour. The company feature throughout the film with many recognisable faces on screen of the current cast that will easily be spotted on our UK stages.

The combination of ballet and contemporary techniques allows Cedar Lake to become what Interim Artistic Director, Alexandra Diamani calls a “Playground” for choreographers to create work on; and choreographers have flocked to create work on this attractive and technically beautiful company. As their 10th Birthday celebrations approach, Cedar Lake to date have worked with global names such as Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui just to name a few. The three pieces of repertoire they are bringing to the UK, Necessity Again, Indigo Rose and Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue are works by the well-known Jo Strømgren, Jiří Kylián and Crystal Pite, continuing their reputation of working with world famous choreographers. Both Necessity Again and Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue are premiers to the UK and if the critical acclaim received for their recent pit stop into Sadler’s Wells in October 2012 is anything to go by all three pieces will be hugely popular up and down the country.

With Time Out calling them the “Best of 2012” along with the label of “Rambert’s hipper elder sibling”, Cedar Lake have been described as “daring and athletic” with the precise technicality of each and every dancer completely mesmerising. The dancers command the stage, drawing your attention from the moment they each step into the space. With your eyes not wanting to leave them until they exit the space, a tennis-like sprain in your neck may occur as a result of your gaze pinging back and forth across the stage. Dance critics and audiences alike have been quick to pick up on the technical skill of the Cedar Lake team. On their UK premier the Evening Standard praised their “crack team of performers juicily tackling the stuff of life and death of dance” and The Guardian noted the “uniformly fabulous group of dancers” whilst the standing ovations the company received in the German town of Baden Baden were enough to raise the roof of the spectacular Festspielhaus.

The three separate pieces heading to the UK spark both varied and individual emotions meaning there will be something for everybody in the audience. Whether it’s a dance fanatic wanting to see incredible technique, the variety of choreography on show from around the world or a music fan enjoying Charles Aznavour making a come-back in Necessity Again, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet come highly recommended, offering an evening of incredible entertainment for everybody. Don’t miss them on their first trip exploring the UK, outside of London.
